Color correcting is the new “in” thing when it comes to makeup. Everywhere I turn, I see new color correcting powders and concealers. The colors are super pretty and remind me of Spring, but what the heck are you supposed to do with PURPLE concealer? I mean, really? Makeup artists have been color correcting for years, and so I thought I’d let you in on a few tips/tricks.
Ultimately, makeup is just art, and your face is a blank canvas. If you think back to elementary school, color theory and the good ole color wheel, it’s really quite easy to figure out. Opposite colors neutralize each other. Most people are worried about a few things on their skin = redness, dark circles, veins or a sallow/yellow complexion.
Here’s the easiest breakdown:
Dark blue/purple = peach – orange concealer (depending on how dark) Also works to cover tattoos.
Redness = Green concealer
Sallow/Yellow = Purple concealer
I did NOT wake up like this.
So for example, if you have SUPER dark/blue under eyes, use a creamy peach/orange concealer under your eyes. There are a ton of different ones out there. I like MAC, NYX or Benefit’s Erase Paste. Make sure to apply your regular skin toned concealer over it. Color. Neutralized. I would recommend a beauty blender or a sponge to apply concealer, but you can also use a brush.
Big red pimple? A little green concealer. Done and done. You get where I’m going with this. 🙂
The key is a) not going crazy and using too much and b) once you’ve used the color corrector, and regular concealer – setting it with a powder. (My favorite is the Coty Airspun Powder, but any translucent powder will work. . .) Ta da!
Note: If you just slather purple concealer on your face, you’re gonna look like a crazy person. The truth is that most people don’t really need to used color correcting concealers, but if you really feel you need to – try it. It works. Now you know.
I had to use a little extra under eye concealer today. Yesterday was Easter and I had too many peeps. And by peeps, I mean – wine. Who doesn’t love peeps? Especially large purple ones.
Happy Monday! xo
