Time to let it go. . .

I have trouble letting things go.  And I don’t mean just makeup.  Luckily, this post isn’t about my personality flaw.  It’s about makeup.  Trust me, it’s much more interesting.

I have the first eyeshadow I owned.  It’s glittery, (CHUNKY 80’s glitter) purple and by caboodles. I know you remember that brand.  Yeah. I think I’ve had it since the 6th grade.  It has made it with me through high school, college, law school and it’s still in my drawer.  Why? I have no idea.  Now it’s just for nostalgia.  I haven’t used it in at least a decade.  Now I kinda want to. . .just cause.  But I won’t.

I get asked all the time, “how long  am I supposed to keep makeup before it goes bad?”

So here’s the general rule about keeping makeup: use your best judgement.  When in doubt, throw it out.  If something starts to smell weird, look weird or not act the way it’s supposed to, toss it.  Liquid and cream products grow bacteria much easier, so be more cautious with those.

MASCARA:

If you use the same mascara everyday, toss it after a few (3-4) months.  It’s not worth risking an eye infection.   This is why I try not to buy expensive mascara.

LIPGLOSS:

Like I said before, if it smells weird or looks weird, toss it.  Lipglosses kinda gross me out after while because you put the wand on your  mouth and then put it back in the tube.  A haven for bacteria.  If you use it everyday, get rid of it after a few months.  If you don’t use it all the time, just monitor it and make sure it’s not getting funky.

POWDER PRODUCTS

If you use clean brushes, I think you can keep these a lot longer.   Again, same rule applies.  You should be able to tell if something needs to go bye bye.  Just remember, the main goal is to avoid spreading bacteria and giving yourself pimples or an infection.  Brushes hold bacteria, which can transfer from your face/eyes onto the products and vice versa.  So clean your brushes often!  I like using my Beauty So Clean to santize the products occasionally.  If you keep them clean and take care of them, you can keep them for as long as you feel comfortable.

See, I wasn’t kidding. I’ve had this thing FOREVER.  Like I said, I have a hard time letting go.  I should probably work on that. Although, maybe I’ll keep it.  One day it might be considered vintage. 🙂

Hope everyone is having a fabulous week!
